Position Purpose

The primary purpose of the Security Officer is to ensure the safety and security of the University of Wollongong (UOW) campus, its personnel, and visitors. This role involves responding promptly to incidents, conducting foot and vehicle patrols, utilizing electronic security systems, and providing excellent customer service. The Security Officer plays a critical role in maintaining a secure and welcoming environment by implementing effective security measures, recording and reporting incidents, and supporting the university's commitment to safety and inclusivity.

 

Position Environment:

Situated within the dynamic and vibrant University of Wollongong campus, the Security Officer operates in a diverse and active environment. The role requires flexibility, adaptability, and a customer service approach to interact effectively with students, staff, and members of the public. The campus environment demands strong communication skills and the ability to work well within an established and diverse team culture.

Key Responsibilities

  • Enhance the overall experience for the University community by providing friendly and professional
  • service.
  • Address inquiries and concerns from students, staff, and visitors promptly and effectively.
  • Ensure immediate and appropriate responses to all incidents on campus.
  • Minimize the impact of incidents through quick and effective intervention.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of all security incidents.
  • Ensure timely reporting of incidents to management for review and action.
  • Conduct regular foot and vehicle patrols to monitor the security of the campus.
  • Ensure the safety of UOW buildings, assets, and community members.
  • Operate card access control and CCTV systems efficiently.
  • Monitor electronic security systems to enhance campus safety and security.
  • Implement and follow emergency procedures effectively.
  • Maintain a high level of vigilance to prevent and address security breaches.
  • Provide security services at high-profile events on campus.
  • Ensure the safety and security of attendees and participants during events.

Additional Information

  • Availability to work various shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license and a clean driving record.
  • Willingness to wear a uniform as required by the employer to maintain a professional appearance.
  • Capability to respond to emergencies quickly and effectively following established protocols.
  • Successful completion of a background check, including criminal history and previous employment verification.

The position leads and monitors customer service with the following positions:

  • Wollongong, Metropolitan and Regional Campuses, Faculties/Divisions, and business units
  • Security and parking contractors

UOW Security Operations Manager, Security Coordinator, and management Facilities Management Division. Other University employees.

Experience

  • Current and applicable NSW 1A & 1C Security License.
  • Current NSW First Aid Certification.
  • Current NSW Driver Licence.
  • 1+ years of experience in a similar role.
  • Australian/New Zealand citizen or permanent Australian resident or hold a visa that entitles you to work in Australia (other than a student or working holiday visa).
  • Ability to pass additional security clearances.
  • Ability to pass a medical.
  • Working with Children Check – UOW Specific.
  • Desirable:

  • Previous experience in a similar role.
  • Additional certifications or training in security or related fields.

  • Ability to work well within an established and diverse team culture.
  • High level of attention to detail in recording and reporting incidents.

  • Experience in a similar role.
  • Conflict resolution skills for managing and resolving disputes effectively.
  • Ability to generate innovative solutions and implement improvements in security operations.
  • Proficiency in using computer systems, including Email, Word, and Excel.
  • Familiarity with the latest security technologies and trends to enhance operational efficiency.
